Ryde Pier

I often fished Ryde Pier as a teenager with my friends but I must admit that my later years there has been a decline in fishing this mark as I often here mixed reports on the fishing there and to be honest the times that I have fished there have been blanks.

So when I went in to get some bait from Drew at bait and tackle ryde last week we were talking we were heading for Yarmouth Pier but after our talk nick and I headed for Ryde Pier,
The wind had dropped and turned out to be a nice evening we were fishing the run off and I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of bites we were getting.

I was the first to bring a fish in which turned out to be a smooth hound pup followed by nick with one him self of about 2-3lb.

I got very surprised when I pulled in a Tub Gurnard.
I also remember my first Gurnard was caught from Ryde Pier when I was just 15 that one being a Red Gurnard.
There were other fish pulled out including a small sole, dogfish, pout, eel and more smooth hounds.
I must say in closing that it is a mark I putting more effort into fishing being a Ryde lad.

Sole Fishing

My first charter trip (not my last) just a small blog for now.
We set out at 7 pm on SeaRaider with skipper Jason Lovell in search of sole bait was supplied by Drew at bait and tackle Ryde,

I've always heard that Jason puts you right on the fish and this is true it was slow to start with but soon picked up with a verity of fish being caught.

The first sole was caught by Jeff closely followed by Nick with a Flounder

In between there was a small bass and Smooth-hound pup caught by Brad followed by a Pout for me (seems to me that its all I catch at the moment) Next was Nick with a Sole
Followed by Brandon's Smooth-hound pup. (looks happy lol)

After this the wind started to pick up a bit so moved behind the brake water for some shelter where Jeff Had his 2nd Sole and Brad had another small Bass.

Only Crabs for the rest of us but a lovely evening non the less Jason also made the tea which was nice.
I will be going out again soon but for now if you want a trip with Jason then contact him searaiderfishingcharters or phone 07507 535971
and for all you bait needs see Drew Baitandtackle  07563 779319

Whiting here soon

I have been reading and I wonder if this is wroth ago and what other people think or prefer

Traditionally, whiting anglers have used small long-shanked hooks, enabling them to strike when the bite is detected, which aids in setting the hook. Striking at whiting when using long-shanked hooks is vital to secure a solid hook-up. Those who use long-shanked hooks usually fish for them using nibble tip rods, which have an extremely sensitive tip. This allows the angler to see the smallest of bites before striking.

Technology is always changing, however, and the long-shanked hook in the tackle box of the whiting angler is slowly being replaced by the circle hook.
Circle hooks may only be fairly new to many anglers, but they have been around for hundreds of years. Every day, more anglers are turning to circles because of their success for both hooking and keeping fish on the hook – providing they are fished in the correct manner.

People seem to be saying that using a circle hook increases the chance of catching fish is this true or not it is something that I will be putting to the test over the next few months I'm going to have one rod with and one without with the same rigs and bait on both.

The term circle hook can be applied to a range of designs. Circle hook models have a point that turns mildly inward toward the shank. A true circle hook snags nothing at all, even if placed in your pocket – this is also the same when it enters a fish’s mouth.
Many hook manufacturers make some version of a hook resembling a circle. Each has their unique trait that they consider to be the best.

I have found that whiting are not so hard to catch in the winter months and they tend to hit whatever bait you are using at the time I have had them on worm, squid and mackie.

So people let me know your thought on

Isle of Wight Fishing

All though it has been a slow year for a lot of us there are some cracking fish being caught around the island form shore and boat.

This is my first bass of the year only 2lb caught on Dirty Squid at Cowes on a 1 up 1 down rig

But there have been some lovely silver bars caught ranging in size here are a couple caught by local angler Gazza Pritchett on the 11/08/2013 at the back of the island 3 lb and 7 lb I believe but its always nice to see them coming out the drink.

Here are some great catches from the charter boat Searaider fishing charters if you want to get out for a good days fishing with a skipper that knows some of the best places around the Isle of Wight get in contact with Searaider Fishing Charters Lovell here are a few photo's of some catches.

There have also been a few nice sole come up as well this one was caught by Carl Mcmahon at Shanklin fisherman's cottage I'm unsure of the size but a nice fish non the less.

These are few of my choice that I thought I'd write a small blog on stay tuned for more blogs all in all there is plenty of fishing to go around.

Springvale 03/08/2013

Very slow night after hearing some good reports of fish coming out of Springvale a friend and I decided we would have a bash, It was a lovely cool night with a slight sw breeze Arriving 3 hours before high tide  we fished with rag worm and squid we fished till an hour after high and am sorry to say there was nothing biting apart from the crabs. I know Springvale can be a great area to fish so maybe give it another go soon when there is a higher tide.
